Research areas/interests
I am interested in literary practices of oppositional discourses in the context of identity politics in contemporary texts. In current and recent essays, I examine the ways in which women and minorities revise canonical texts and subvert them, thus writing in a form that can be compared to the palimpsest—a manuscript which has been partly erased and written over. For instance, my article on Marie Darrieussecq considers contemporary representations of women in advertisement and in political discourse as so many texts that are reflected in the novel and that the author attempts to subvert. To illustrate my point in that article, I drew from newspaper articles, sociological studies, feminist texts as well as literary criticism. In my book chapter on Gérard Etienne, I showed how the economic state of Haiti is reflected in given literary processes at work in the text. Pointing to literature as social practice and using Deleuze and Guattari's theoretical model allowed me to demonstrate how a given social reality (in this case, cultural schizophrenia for Haitian immigrants portrayed in the novel) functions as a strategic literary device in a text. In a publication on Marie NDiaye and J.K. Huysmans, I examine the subversive reinscription of a cultural ""site of memory"" (Pierre Nora) which traditionally pits Paris against its ""province.""
Papers recently published include a study of the derisive representation of the pornographic body in Marie Nimier's La Nouvelle Pornographie, and a study of the philosophical questioning of cancer via photographs in Annie Ernaux's L'Usage de la photo.
